When I was five, my parents bought a dry cleaner. Over time they opened a restaurant and a liquor store and built a shopping center. Dinner was about customers, employees, and the decision nobody wanted to make. I pressed shirts and waited tables, and I watched two people build something from nothing and keep it alive through years when the math did not work. That is the first world.
The second world is capital markets. A finance degree from the University of Richmond took me to Lehman Brothers in 2005, where I was a bookrunner on 35 IPOs and follow-ons worth $8.1 billion. Harvard Business School came after. Then Bloomberg, where I was employee eleven at Bloomberg Government, a leveraged-finance desk that closed 13 deals for $1.6 billion without a default, a real estate developer where I raised $20 million in nine months, and a Goldman Sachs portfolio company where I was chief of staff and twice interim head of finance and quarterbacked a $200 million sale.
Along the way I have been CFO or the top finance person more than ten times, sat on six boards as a member or observer, closed more than 60 equity, debt, and M&A deals for more than $10 billion, led four audits including two first-time audits, implemented NetSuite, Intacct, and Salesforce, and hired everyone from CEOs to analysts. I was also a partner in a family office, where I learned what it looks like when a business is one person's whole balance sheet.
In late 2022 I started TFP360 to bring the second world to the first. The companies I work with are the ones my parents would have run if they had had a few million more in revenue and a sponsor on the board. They have real payroll, real customers, and a finance function that has fallen behind the business.
Two things I believe about the job. Finance should have a point of view about the company, not just a report on it. And the best outcome of my work is that you no longer need me, because the function I built runs without me and the person who runs it is better than I was.
